Q&A: Victoria Beckham’s Beijing boutique dreams

British style icon and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham visited Beijing this week to launch her latest fashion collection and spoke candidly about life and her creations.

Q: Can you give us some specific details on your latest collection?

A: For me, the new collection has a very strong military theme. Brooklyn style has also richly inspired me. This is what I want to express: stay true to myself.

Q: What’s your impression of Beijing and China? Do you think China's fashion is corny?

A: I really like Beijing. I think women here are fashionable. They really understand fashion. Actually, I have been here for only a couple of days, and I really didn't have opportunities to explore, as much as I would like to. I've done a little bit shopping, and every time I was out there (in Sanlitun), I tried to see as much as I could. I really hope to come back. This moment is really important to me.

Q: Who wears your dresses? Who is your muse when you create a whole new collection?

A: I'm fortunate enough to be able to have some of the most beautiful famous women in the world wearing my dresses. Last night was really exciting for me, because there were lots of Chinese celebrities coming to wear my dresses. They look incredible. These women look beautiful in my dresses. I think they look great here. So who knows? Maybe my muse for next season may be one of the women I met last night.

Q: China is a huge market for fashion. Many labels are coming in. Why are you so late?

A: You know what, I can tell you truthfully, Joyce (a store in the World Trade Center) has been great. It was a great start, and it is really wonderful. They have supported me right from the start. After starting that new category, the Victoria line, I'm going to be adding something to what I am now doing. But I am doing it in a steady way, not rushing. Maybe one day, I'll have boutique stores here. That is certainly a dream, something I am hoping for.

This market is really important to me. I think it suits me here. That's a long way, but definitely an angle for me at present.

Q: I heard you are preparing your online store. What is it about?

A: We are just researching at this moment, but for me, what I do is very international. Because this market is as important to me, as America and Europe, I'll definitely take Chinese customers into count.

Q: Do you have a secret in design?

A: In each and every thing I design, I designed because I want to wear it. If it is a bag, because it is a bag I want to carry, or some sunglasses I want to wear. I can see myself in it.

To stay focused is also very important, because I want to do so much, and I am doing things at a steady pace.

Q: Your kids are so well dressed. Are you considering starting a children's wear line?

A: Maybe one day but not at the moment. There are a lot of people out there doing incredible clothes for children, not just yet, but maybe one day.

Q: What is the most important award you have won, in your opinion?

A: Winning Designing Brand of the Year last year was really incredible for my whole team and me. We are really a small team. That’s enormous. Look at those people who are in the category with us, Tom Ford, Stella McCartney, Christopher Bailey. But in fact we won, that was really incredible for us.

Q: You are a style icon, what is your best dress-up tip?

A: I tried to not wear anything that is too complicated. If you've got to get your legs out, you should put your top half away. Don't give it out at the same time. It's scary.

Q: Singer, designer, businesswoman, model, style icon. Which word best describes you? Or which job do you like best?

A: I'm very respectful for my past and for what I've done in the Spice Girls, but fashion is always my passion. That's what I wanted to do. I do what I do because I love women. I want to empower women. I want them to feel good about themselves, to be confident. No one gives me that advice.

P: Quién luce tus vestidos? ¿Quién es tu musa inspiradora cuando creas una colección totalmente nueva?

R: Tengo la suerte de que algunas de las mujeres más hermosas del mundo lucen mis diseños. Me alegré mucho anoche porque varias celebridades chinas llegaban al evento en mis vestidos. Se ven increíbles. Estas mujeres se ven hermosas en mis diseños. Pienso que aquí mis diseños se ven muy bien.¿Quién sabe? Quizás la musa para mi próxima colección sea una de estas mujeres que conocí anoche.

P: China es un gran mercado para la moda. Muchas marcas están llegando al país. ¿Por qué tú tardaste tanto?

R: ¿Sabes qué? Te puedo responder con toda honestidad, Joyce (una tienda en el Centro Mundial de Comercio) ha sido muy buena. Fue una forma de comenzar muy buena y eso es maravilloso. Me apoya desde el primer momento. Luego de comenzar con la categoría nueva, mi línea Victoria, voy a seguir agregando más a lo que hago ahora. Pero quiero hacerlo despacio, sin apurarme. Quizás algún día tenga mis propias tiendas aquí. Ese es definitivamente un deseo, algo que espero poder lograr. Este mercado es muy importante para mí. Creo que me sienta muy bien. Es un camino largo, pero definitivamente una perspectiva para mí en el presente.

P: Oí que estás preparando tu tienda online. ¿De qué se trata?

R: Sólo estamos haciendo investigaciones por el momento, pero para mi, lo que hago es a nivel internacional. Porque este mercado es importante para mí, como Estados Unidos y Europa. Por supuesto que tendré en cuenta a mis clientes de China.

P: ¿Tienes algún secreto a la hora de diseñar?

R: Cada pieza que diseño, la diseño porque yo misma quiero lucirla. Si es una cartera, es porque es una cartera que yo quiero llevar, o gafas que yo quiero usar. Puedo verme a mi misma en esos diseños. Mantenerse enfocada es también muy importante, porque hay tanto que quiero hacer, y lo estoy haciendo paso a paso y firme.

P: Tus hijos se visten tan bien. Estás considerando una línea para chicos?

R: Quizás algún día, pero por el momento no. Hay mucha gente haciendo ropa increíble para niños. Por ahora no, pero quizás algñun día.

P: Según tu opinión, ¿Cuál es el premio mças importante que has ganado hasta ahora?

R: Ganas Marca de Diseñador del Año en el 2011 fue increíble para mí y para todo mi equipo. Somos un equipo muy pequeño. Ese premio es algo gigante. Miren a toda la gente con la que compartíamos la categoría: Tom Ford, Stella McCartney, Christopher Bailey. Pero ganamos nosotros, eso nos pareció increíble.

P: Sos un icono de la moda, cuál es tu tip para vestirte de la mejor manera?

R: Trato de vestirme con diseños sencillos. Si tienes que mostrar tus piernas, esconde tu mitad superior. No muestres ambas partes al mismo tiempo. Da miedo.

P: Cantante, diseñadora, mujer de negocios, modelo, icono de la moda. Qué palabra te describe mejor? o ¿Qué profesión te describe mejor?

R: Respeto mucho mi pasado y lo que hice con las Spice Girls, pero la moda ha sido siempre mi pasión. Esto es lo que siempre quise hacer. Lo hago porque amo la figura femenina. Quiero que la mujer se sienta poderosa. Quiero que se sienta bien con ella misma, tener seguridad. Nadie puede darme consejos sobre eso.
