Victoria Beckham and Ken Paves share a new passion: The Trade. It’s a charity that gives victims of trafficking, abuse, and poverty in Brazil, Mexico, and Kenya the tools and training to earn a living as stylists—and on September 23rd, your hair can help the cause. Beckham got the scoop.

Victoria Beckham: Tell me, why is this work so important to you?
Ken Paves: You and I didn’t come from the lifestyle we have now. Giving back is a way of being grateful and humble.
VB: What’s your first charitable memory?
KP: I remember watching the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon and crying because kids on it couldn’t walk. I begged my mom and dad to send money!
VB: You’re such a good person. How can I get my kids to embrace giving back?
KP: Your kids are already so considerate. When they met my partner, Martin, you had them ask about his deafness.
VB: And you both taught them sign language. My son Cruz wanted to know the bad words! Tell us all about The Trade.
KP: Hattori Hanzo, the scissors company, asked me to get involved. The idea is, we take women out of human trafficking or domestic abuse by giving them a craft.

VB: How does it work?
KP: The Trade reaches out to local groups to find women who’ve escaped violence and are in protection [from their abusers]. On The Trade’s first big mission to Brazil, they trained 12 women and opened a salon. The greatest thing you can ever give anybody is a skill. Beyond earning a living, it gives them pride.
VB: It’s about empowering women.
KP: I grew up with insecurities. When I realized I could make people feel great by doing hair, it began to heal every moment I didn’t feel good. It changed me. I hope that’s what happens for these women.

VB: ¿Cuál es tu primer
recuerdo sobre actividades benéficas?
KP: Me acuerdo una

que no podían caminar. ¡Le rogué a mis padres que envien dinero!
VB: Sos una muy buena persona.

bastante considerados. Cuando conocieron a mi pareja, Martin, se interesaban
por su sordera.
VB: Y ustedes dos les

Contanos sobre The Trade.
KP: Hattori
Hanzo, la empresa de tijeras, me pidió participación. La idea es:
sacamos a las mujeres del tráfico de blancas o abuso doméstico y les damos un
oficio.
VB: ¿Cómo funciona?
KP: The Trade llega a
los grupos locales para encontrar mujeres que hayan escapado de la violencia y
estén protegidas [de sus abusadores]. En la primera misión de The Trade, se
capacitaron a 12 mujeres y se abrió un salón. Lo mejor que le podes dar a
alguien es una habilidad. Más allá del dinero que ganan, esto les da orgullo.
VB: Se trata de dar más
poder a las mujeres.
KP: Crecí con
inseguridades. Cada momento que yo me había sentido mal empezó a sanar cuando
me di cuenta de que puedo hacer sentir bien a la gente arreglándoles el cabello.
Me cambió por completo. Espero que lo mismo les suceda a estas mujeres.
