On Oxford Street on Wednesday, just as the summer sales were starting, I could sniff a change in the air. In Selfridges, it was pandemonium. There was a queue of people waiting to be allowed past the velvet rope into Louis Vuitton.
I made my way to the second floor, to Personal Shopping, where again there was a queue. I asked the sales assistant whether she could sell me a Victoria Beckham bag. She looked at me as if I had lost my mind, which I probably have.
‘Beckham is very difficult,’ she said gravely. ‘They have sold out. The next consignment will not be in until August. You will have to put your name down now.’ These bags cost up to £15,000.
