LEYTONSTONE: Becks' boyhood home 'could still fetch seven-figure sum'
28th May 2009
DAVID Beckham's boyhood home could yet sell for £1million after interest from a diamond dealer in Monaco, estate agent Colin Evans claims.
Mr Evans, who is selling the home for owner Iftakar Mahmood, said he had just returned from a meeting with the mysterious potential buyer in Paris, who is "dead keen" to go ahead.
"He wants to remain anonymous because he's quite wealthy. We're talking millions - not just a couple of million, quite a few million," he said.
"I think this man is more intelligent than any person I've met so far. He's an avid fan of Beckham and he doesn't need his name going round the world."
Mr Evans added that although the bidder made an initial offer of £750,000 for the modest three-bed house in Norman Road, Leytonstone, it was possible the sale price could rise by up to £250,000.
"The owner is on board. He knows what I'm doing - while I've been out in Paris, I've been briefing him every couple of days," he said.
"The buyer is in diamonds but I don't want to reveal too much about him at the moment."
Negotiations were taking place between the owner, the bidder and their solicitors today (Thursday) and Mr Evans believes a deal is closed to being clinched.
He said: "We're negotiating at the moment and we're at a stage where it might well be going through."
Mr Evans was the first to inform the current owner about the home's former occupant and originally listed it online for £850,000.
He first upped the possible price tag to £1million in November last year, after claiming to have received a firm offer at the seven-figure mark from an Australian Beckham fan.
But the offer never materialised and the house was put up for auction at Savills earlier this month with a guide price of just £215,000.
The new bidder showed an interest when it was withdrawn from the auction, after failing to attract any bids above the guide price.
The average house price in Norman Road is about £203,000.
